As a mother, it is natural to take time to ensure that your baby is protected and safe from harm, this extends to their skin care. Many babies will require help for dry skin or other conditions so knowing what ingredients inside a product are safe and what is not is very important.
There are very important properties to watch out for when choosing a product for your baby. The product must not contain harsh chemicals and must be described as gentle on the baby’s skin and will not cause irritation. A baby’s skin is incredibly fragile and must be treated with products that have the least possible chance of having any reaction with your baby’s skin. Incase of an allergic reaction, it is important that the product is described as hypoallergenic, this ensure that even if the baby has allergies or very sensitive skin, it will have the least chance of triggering a reaction. It is also worth remembering that certain fragrances can trigger irritation and allergic reaction. Parabens are very common in soaps is a preservative and can cause irritation so keep a look out for this in the ingredients.
Another ingredient to look out for is Propylene Glycol. This ingredient is alcohol which is most commonly found in lotions and moisturisers and can irritate sensitive baby’s skin. Artificial pigment and dyes which are not from natural sources such as plants or minerals can also cause irritation so look out for dyes from fruits or plants in the ingredients. When choosing a safe product, ensure that the product is as natural as possible and be sure to know what specific ingredients to avoid. what is advertised on the front of the box or on an advert may not be what the ingredients reflect. Below I’ve put together a list of natural and gentle products which should reduce the amount of irritation the baby will experience, I hope this is helpful for those who are struggling to find the right skin care product for their baby.
